Isn’t Abhishek Bachchan too old to play Smriti Irani’s son?

Smriti Irani to play Abhishek Bachchan's mother in Mere Apne

We have heard of filmmakers pulling off casting coups, but Smriti Irani as Jr Bachchan’s mother in Mere Apne is nothing less than a casting disaster…

Smriti Irani, who is best remembered for her role as Tulsi Virani in the Hindi soap opera Kyun Ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, will make her Bollywood debut with Bhushan Kumar’s Mere ApneNow we are glad that she is back to acting and not letting her career in politics take over as completely as it has over the past few years. But after having a successful TV stint – even if it was some years ago – isn’t it shocking that the talented actor is making her entry into filmi duniya by playingAbhishek Bachchan’s mother? If the film was on the lines of Paa, we would have understood, but that’s not the case, we hear. Which makes us really curious to know who came up with this casting idea. Why are we not happy? Coz Abhishek and Smriti are of the same age. Yes, both actors are 37, the same generation. In fact, Abhi is a month or two older, by our calculations. Maybe the makers of Mere Apne should have listened to what 21-year-old Shraddha Kapoor had to say – didn’t she tag Aaradhya Bachchan’s daddy dearest ‘old’ and refuse to work with him? And to be fair to the Kapoor lass, technically Abhi is rather too old to play a youngster and by no means can we imagine Smriti as his mother. And this, in spite of her act as Tulsi and her rather…err…motherly shape.
