Reel gets real: Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra join the biopic race!

Ranbir Kapoor in biopic

The commercial success of films like The Dirty Picture and Paan Singh Tomar seems to have encouraged filmmakers to take the risk of making a biographical film

For a long time Bollywood has been reluctant to explore the genre of biographical films – after all, it is a daunting task to translate ‘real’ into ‘reel’. But today the scenario has changed and it’s raining biopics in B-town. Yes, every other director is ready to put in that extra effort and time to bring interesting life stories to the big screen. And with audiences approval, actors too are more open to portraying real people onscreen, unafraid of carrying an entire film on their shoulders.

A few years ago Shahrukh Khan broke out of his romantic-hero image by playing the hockey coach of a women’s team in Chak De! India. The film was inspired by the life of former Indian hockey player Mir Ranjan Negi. In Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s latest release Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Farhan Akhtar essayed the role of the legendary Olympic runner – the movie explored his acting skills to the fullest. While the BMB actor is now enjoying all the accolades coming his way, it took work and determination to make it happen. And with the positive reactions to this latest film, a slew of biopics are being talked about starring some pretty big names like Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Vidya Balan…
