Canonical last month launched a crowd funding target $32 million for the Ubuntu Edge smartphone via Indiegogo. As expected the goal was a little too ambitious and Canonical has fallen short of its crowd funding target by $19.2 million. From the beginning the target seemed very ambitious and after 30 days Canonical only managed to capture 27,000 backers.
It got off to a great start as it managed to get $3.4 million in the first 24 hours, but the donations slowly tempered down. Canonical had stated that the first 5,000 backers would receive a phone for $600, while everyone thereafter would need to pay $830. Eventually, limited tiers of $625, $675, and $725 were added. Eventually a tier cost of $695 was also added, but in spite of the new tiers Canonical only managed to raise $8.3 million by August 7.
In the world of crowd funding $12.8 million is a huge number and the highest ever raised after the Pebble, but it counts for nothing as the project did not get the minimum funds to get the ball rolling.
