Ford India has introduced a new voice-activated technology, the Sync AppLink, which creates a connection between the software-compatible smartphone applications and the in-car system. The software was showcased at Mobile Developer Summit 2013 in Bangalore and will be launched in India in 2014. Ford has opened the AppLink API on its Developer Program website and has invited app developers to add support for the Sync AppLink system in their apps.
Ford will install the Sync AppLink platform in its cars, which will allow a user to connect their smartphones with it and access smartphone applications like Internet radio, navigation apps, music library, get traffic updates, search for places, and do more while on-the-go. Ford’s Sync system will support voice commands to control these mobile apps. The company first introduced this Sync technology in its recently launched SUV EcoSport and is planning to install it in other cars as well.
In terms of apps, the Sync AppLink platform in India will be integrated with locally relevant apps like ESPNcricinfo, MapmyIndia, burrp!, Glympse, and TuneIn Radio first. The company is also planning to rope in other app developers and has posted the API for other developers to develop Sync AppLink compatible apps.
