Clement Town

Famous for housing the world's largest stupa, Clement Town is situated nine km south of Dehradun in Uttarakhand. Set amidst the foothills of the Himalayas the Mindrolling Monastery in Clement Town is one of the largest Buddhistcentres in India.
Khenchen Rinpoche, a prominent lama of the Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism and other monks began the process of re-establishing Mindrolling Monastery in 1965. Mindrolling means “place of perfect emancipation” in Tibetan. In Tibet, Mindrolling was a prominent centre of Vajrayana Buddhism.
It is believed that the temple in Clement was designed and painted by around 50 artists who took three-years to create the structure. Locally known as Tibetan Monastery, the monastery is known for its architectural beauty. The monastery has survived numerous attacks as well as natural calamities.
One of the major attractions of this monastery is its stupa, which was inaugurated in 2002. Popularly known as the Great Stupa, it was constructed for world peace. It is 185 ft in length and 100 sq ft in width. A two acre lush green garden surrounds the magnificent stupa.
The art work of the stupa is a magnificent example of Buddhist art. Shrine rooms with elaborate murals executed in the finest tradition of Tibetan Buddhist art need to be seen. There is a 103 feet high statue of Buddha which is dedicated to Dalai Lama.
