IRCTC to start train ticket bookings through SMS from July 1

Starting July 1, booking train tickets will come handier as the Indian Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will launch an SMS-based service to book train tickets. The services will also be available through a menu-based dialing service (USSD), reports Times of India. This service will enable the feature phones or entry level phones users to get easy access to book tickets through phones.
Users will be able to avail this service by registering their mobile number with IRCTC with their bank details, which will later be used for payments through mobile wallet. According to another report by HinduBusinessLine, IRCTC has enrolled 20 banks for this service, which will provide the Mobile Money Identifier and one time password for authorizing the payment thus made.
One can get information about tickets by first sending a text message including details like the train number, destination of travel, journey date, class of coaches along with their personal details. They will get a number which will then be used for a transaction ID. It is only when the user sends a confirmation message for payment, that the money will be deducted from their accounts. Reportedly charges will be applicable on the service and each SMS will be charged at Rs 3. This apart, users will be charged Rs 5 for accessing tickets priced for up to Rs 5,000 and Rs 10 for tickets costing above Rs 5,000.
