Food critic Besha Rodell knew she'd have some big shoes to fill when she replaced Pulitzer-prize winning writer Jonathan Gold at LA Weekly.
Maybe that's why, when it came time to reprise her predecessor's "99 Essential Restaurants" list, she enlisted the help of the Weekly's entire food writing team: editor Amy Scattergood, writers Tien Nguyen and Garrett Snyder and blogger Christine Chiao.
Now that everyone's chiming in, it looks very different -- more than half of this year's restaurants didn't make the list in 2011. First-timers include brand new restaurants like Alma, Bar Ama, Bestia and BierBeisl. The 2013 list also includes some quintessential LA staples that weren't mentioned on the 2011 list: Pink's hotdogs, Osteria Mozza and Pizzeria Mozza, Philippe's, the Kogi Truck and Cole's.
