Move over Galaxy Gear, Qualcomm has a smartwatch too!

As expected, Samsung today announced the Galaxy Gear smartwatch in Berlin today. While Pranav Mistry was showing off Samsung’s smartwatch, Qualcomm’s CEO and President, Dr Paul Jacobs showed off the company’s own surprise smartwatch at its annual Uplinq event in San Diego. Called Toq (pronounced Talk), the smartwatch is aimed as a companion wearable device to a smartphone. The killer feature would be its always-on Mirasol display that will give it days of battery life.
Toq does not have any camera like the Galaxy Gear but it does seem to have an accelerometer and mic. It connects to the smartphone via Bluetooth and can be charged wirelessly. Users will have the option to buy a pair of wireless Bluetooth headsets that will also charge wirelessly when kept in the case as shown in the photo.
Toq will have multiple watch faces and will also show the weather, call records and messages, calendar and music. The best thing about it is it doesn’t have any buttons – not even a power on and off button! Qualcomm will launch an SDK that will enable app developers to create apps for it.
